Data Centre Technician – Hayes
Salary: £40,000 per annum + £150 per week on-call allowance
Hours: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to FridayOverview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Data Centre Technician to join a leading technology and infrastructure organisation. The role involves supporting the day-to-day operation of live data-centre environments, handling a range of cabling, maintenance, and equipment activities while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, professionalism, and customer service.
Role Summary
As a Data Centre Technician, you’ll work as part of an on-site team supporting business-critical environments. You will be responsible for managing technical requests, carrying out cabling installations, assisting with hardware changes, and ensuring all work is completed safely and efficiently. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach are essential to succeed in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Cabling & Administration
- Install and decommission structured cabling systems, including patch panels, patch leads, and cable management.
- Test and troubleshoot copper and fibre cabling using Fluke testing equipment, providing certification reports.
- Assist with installation and relocation of hardware such as servers, switches, and cabinets.
- Support third-party engineers during out-of-hours maintenance, installations, or troubleshooting activities.
- Complete data-centre maintenance tasks, including cabinet, containment, and PDU modifications.
- Record all work accurately across systems such as ServiceNow, SmartView, and Microsoft Office 365.
- Manage site access, approvals, and updates using ticketing systems and customer portals.
- Maintain patching records, stock inventories, and project documentation.
- Ensure all materials are available and properly stored and notify when stock needs replenishment.
- Always obtain authorisation before undertaking on-site works or modifications.
Site Duties- Escort and oversee visiting contractors, ensuring full compliance with safety and security requirements.
- Conduct daily and weekly inspections, including cabinet and security checks.
- Manage inductions for site visitors and contractors.
- Ensure all cabinet doors and locks are secure following works.
- Maintain high operational standards throughout the facility.
Candidate Profile
Ideal Qualifications
- Valid ECS or CSCS Card
- Recognised qualification such as CNet CNCI®, CNIT®, or BICSI Installer Level 2/3 (or equivalent)
- Full, clean driving licence and own vehicle (required for travel when on call)
Experience
- Previous hands-on experience in a similar data-centre or technical environment
- Skilled in the installation and testing of copper and fibre cabling systems
- Good understanding of data-centre operations, including power distribution and cooling
Desirable Experience
- Familiarity with Audio Visual, Electronic Security, IoT, and network systems
- Awareness of change-management processes
- Experience working within planned maintenance or change windows
Additional Details
- Salary: £40,000 per annum
- On-Call Allowance: £150 per week (must be able to attend site within one hour if called)
- Hours: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday
- Overtime: Available when authorised
- Flexibility: Occasional weekend or out-of-hours work to support urgent or scheduled maintenance
